Does you need help around the greens?  Do you stand over the ball in a bunker and wonder where it is going to end up?  Drop a question into this area and see what others in the community think.

Hey guys,

My chipping and pitching had gotten so bad in the past 5 years tha I developed a case of the "short game yips".  I actually flinch on chips or short pitches--it's ugly.  I fight this on the course and once and awhile when I practice.  Out of desparation the past few months, when I've had a chance to play, I tried something new.  When I have a chip or a pitch I gauge the distance and stroke needed as I walk to the ball and pull the club out of my bag.  I then turn my back on the hole and practice what I thing I need to do with out looking at the ball or hole.  I then turn, address, the ball, take a look, and go!  I'm not yipping now, but my distance control needs work.

When I practice I don't have to deal with the "yip/flinching" problem very often.   Any suggestions on how to get better distance control without creating the tension that caused the yips.

Sounds painful Dave!  When it comes to the shortgame there are two things that help keep me on track.

The first is practice, practice, practice - there are in infinite number of shots you can encounter around the green.  By practicing from everywhere around the practice green I'm training myself to have a good muscle memory reserve.  If you do this effectively, you can correlate to just about anything you encounter on the course.

The second one if my pre-shot routine which includes not addressing the ball until I've made a couple good practice swings.  Focusing on a consistent pre-shot routine helps me get my mind off of the pressure and focus on executing my next shot.  Once I've made a couple good passes that will yield the shot I'm trying to hit, I feel confident enough to step up and do it.
